Not every executive who spends a career at the top of public companies chooses to end up running a private one. Michael Polk did, and he says it has been one of the more rewarding decisions of his professional life.
From Global Brands to a Private Portfolio Company
Polk’s resume reads like a tour of the consumer goods industry. He held leadership roles at Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods and Unilever before becoming CEO of Newell Brands in 2011, a position he held until 2019. During his time at Newell, he oversaw a workforce of more than 50,000 employees and helped convert the company from a loose holding structure into a single operating business.
After leaving Michael Polk Newell Brands stepped away from the corporate world, at least for a while. The break didn’t last. In 2020, Berkshire Partners asked him to take the helm at Implus LLC, a fitness accessories company operating outside the public markets. Michael Polk accepted, curious about what leadership would look like without a board of public shareholders watching every quarterly result.
What he found was a business where he could operate closer to the ground. Rather than allocating capital from a distance or navigating multiple layers of management to influence decisions, Polk now spends much of his time working directly with teams on brand and business development.
He describes the experience as sitting in the crucible alongside his employees, helping shape the choices that move the business forward day to day. That hands-on involvement, paired with the accountability that comes from still answering to a board and ownership group, has kept the role demanding in ways that echo his public company days.
Michael Polk has guided Implus through pandemic era disruptions while building out its operational foundation. He now describes his current position, quite simply, as the best chapter of his career so far. Read this article for additional information.
