JP Morgan’s Justin Nelson Says College Major Matters Little

Finance firms have traditionally recruited from economics and business programs. Justin Nelson, a Managing Director at JP Morgan, has stopped paying much attention to that pipeline. Nelson leads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, where his group of 20 oversees more than $15 billion in assets. After close to 30 years in the business, he has concluded that reading people well counts for more than technical training.

What He Screens For

A recent Money Inc profile describes how Justin Nelson approaches recruiting. He told the publication, “I actually couldn’t care less what your major is.” Justin Nelson priorities are curiosity about finance, natural aptitude for the work, and a personality that comes across as modest and sincere. Those traits are harder to teach than portfolio construction or cash flow analysis, so he looks for them first.

The reasoning comes from the nature of private wealth work. Clients at this level are often families with complicated relationships, inheritance questions, and plans that span generations. An advisor who can build a model but cannot sit calmly through a tense family meeting will struggle to keep those relationships intact.

Psychology in the Mix

Justin Nelson JP Morgan has noticed that many of the strongest applicants he meets studied psychology. He estimates that roughly half of the daily work at JP Morgan’s private bank involves financial results, while the other half involves understanding and working constructively with people. Graduates who arrive with that grounding tend to adapt quickly.

He also welcomes candidates from biology, engineering, and other unexpected fields, reasoning that they bring perspectives a finance-only team would lack his own resume supports the idea. Justin Nelson earned degrees in chemistry and economics at Tufts University before completing an MBA at Columbia University.

For students wondering whether a nontraditional degree closes doors, the JP Morgan executive offers a clear answer. Interest, raw ability, and character carry more weight with him than the name on a diploma. Refer to this article for more information.
