Eight Decades On, Abdul Latif Jameel Remains a Family Business Built on a Founder’s Principles

From Toyota distribution to AI research, the company traces its identity to a 1945 vision

When Abdul Latif Jameel launched the company bearing his name in 1945, Saudi Arabia had few paved roads and personal vehicles were a rarity. Eighty years later, the business he built employs more than 11,000 people from over 80 nationalities, operates in more than 35 countries on six continents, and funds research at institutions including MIT and Imperial College London. A detailed account of that arc is available at alj.com.

The company’s growth accelerated after 1955, when the founder secured a distribution agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation — a relationship that has now stretched more than 70 years. Abdul Latif Jameel Motors remains Toyota’s authorized distributor in Saudi Arabia and operates in six countries through Jameel Motors, which handles Toyota and Lexus distribution in China, Algeria, Japan, Monaco, and Morocco. The partnership was reinforced in early 2026 when senior leaders from both organizations gathered in Beijing to discuss future plans.

Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel KBE, the founder’s son and current chairman, has expanded the company’s scope well beyond automotive. He founded Community Jameel in 2003 to continue the family’s philanthropic tradition, and the organization has since cofounded major research centers at MIT and Imperial College London. Those include the MIT Jameel Clinic, focused on AI in health; the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), whose co-founders shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics; and the Jameel Institute at Imperial College London, which modeled the spread of COVID-19 during the pandemic.

Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel received an honorary knighthood (KBE) from Queen Elizabeth II for his philanthropic activities and support for arts and culture. He was also honored by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia with the King Abdul Aziz Medal of the First Order for job creation initiatives. An MIT feature from 2016 covers his receipt of the Bronze Beaver, MIT’s highest honor for alumni service.

The company’s current portfolio spans renewable energy, water infrastructure, financial services, residential real estate, and healthcare. Fotowatio Renewable Ventures, part of Jameel Energy, manages a growing portfolio of solar and battery storage projects across the Middle East, Australia, Europe, and Latin America. Almar Water Solutions, another arm of the business, operates desalination and water treatment projects from Chile to Bahrain. The Jameel family were also among the founding shareholders of U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, reflecting a longstanding belief that mobility and technology are inseparable.
