Justin Nelson Says JP Morgan Hires for Character First

Justin Nelson has spent nearly three decades building a career at JP Morgan, and he says the biggest lesson he has learned has little to do with spreadsheets. As Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, Nelson oversees more than $15 billion in client assets and leads a team of twenty people. Yet when new hires cross his desk, their college transcripts rarely factor into his decision.

“When I’m out looking to hire people, I actually couldn’t care less what your major is,” Justin Nelson JP Morgan said. What he wants instead are candidates who show genuine curiosity about finance, paired with humility.

Character Over Credentials

Nelson looks for people who are “interested in finance, have the raw skills to be in this business and are humble and genuine.” That standard has led him toward candidates who studied psychology, biology, and engineering rather than finance or economics, fields once treated as mandatory for a career at JP Morgan.

His reasoning comes from firsthand experience. Half of the job, he explains, comes down to numbers and performance. The other half depends on reading people and knowing how to talk with them during moments that matter most, like inheritance decisions or family disputes over money.

Nelson’s own path reflects that same appetite for variety. He earned degrees in chemistry and economics at Tufts University before completing an MBA at Columbia University, a combination that taught him to pull ideas from more than one discipline at once.

For Nelson, that mix of backgrounds is what makes a wealth management team stronger. Clients bring their whole lives into these conversations, not their portfolios alone, and an advisor who only speaks the language of finance will miss part of what is actually being said.

Justin Nelson has held this hiring standard for nearly three decades, long enough to watch candidates from unexpected fields grow into some of his most trusted advisors. He measures that trust the same way he measures the rest of his career, through relationships with families that stretch on for twenty years or longer, built on genuine connection rather than pedigree alone.
