In a study of 36 mobile apps for popular restaurants, Zaxby’s has seen the most downloads over the past year, growing 141% more than the second leading app, according to QSR Magazine. Several other popular restaurants have had to cut back on rewards programs for customers, but Patrick Schwing, the restaurant’s Chief Marketing Officer, took a different approach. To promote the app at launch, Schwing offered a generous sign-up reward. One of his main goals was to give back to loyal customers while also drawing in new app users.
Zaxby’s strategy was unorthodox, but it has had the desired effect of increasing the app’s popularity and use. Statistics show that the number of Zaxby’s app users has increased by over 100% since the app was released in September of 2022, and continues to maintain a high rating in the app store.
Customers who download or even just update the restaurant’s app and join the Zax Rewardz program are gifted with a free Big Zax Snak meal, rather than just a sandwich or a drink alone. The meal is one of Zaxby’s more popular offerings, with crinkle fries, chicken fingers, toast, dipping sauce, and a drink all included. The offer was so popular that Zaxby’s extended the sign-up deal and continues to see success with it.
Regular app users can earn ten reward points for every dollar they spend, which can later be redeemed for free food or discounts. Special deals and offers are put into the app periodically as well. Points can be earned by purchasing food in the app, at the restaurant or online. Even just using some of the app functions can earn points.
