Roosevelt Island: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of New York City

Coffee Shelton Haynes

The Renwick Ruin on Roosevelt Island in New York City is a hidden gem with an interesting backstory. Since 1854 the Gothic Revival smallpox hospital has had a castle-like appearance that is striking and unique. However, this is only one attraction on the island. It has undergone significant revitalization projects in recent years under the leadership of CEO Shelton Haynes and the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation.

Roosevelt Island is a place of escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with a small-town feel that provides tree-lined streets, open spaces, and various parks. The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation agency manages the island’s roads, parks, sports facilities, public transportation, buildings, and public safety department, aiming to promote Roosevelt Island’s businesses, restaurants, parks, and other attractions to tourists and residents alike.

The latest achievement in the revitalization projects is the final building of the 19-acre Riverwalk complex, Riverwalk 9, which secured 185 million dollars in construction financing. This building will provide 253 market-rate and 104 affordable apartments for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center employees, office spaces, and amenities such as a basketball court, fitness center, and outdoor area. It is set to be completed in mid-2025.

The island has historical landmarks commemorating the late U.S. president, such as the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park. In addition, the Park and Hope Memorial inspires those facing challenges, as sculptor Meredith Bergmann incorporated bronze sculptures depicting Roosevelt’s disability due to polio. Furthermore, Hudson and related companies have leased 90,000 square feet of space on Main Street, increasing new retail establishments such as Island OM, Wholesome Taqueria, and Granny Annie’s Bar and Kitchen.

Roosevelt Island also boosts its tourism industry by opening the first Graduate Roosevelt Island hotel. The hotel includes a fine-dining spot on the rooftop, focusing on local offerings, seasonality, and sustainability. Featured on the menu is New American cuisine, and is run by Marc Rose and restaurateur Med Abrous’s company.

Overall, Roosevelt Island is a sanctuary for both visitors and residents alike, offering inexpensive housing, beauty, and conveniences that provide a small-town atmosphere in the heart of New York City. With more revitalization projects on the horizon, seeing what CEO Shelton Haynes and RIOC have in store for this quaint island community is exciting.
