Raffaele Riva is a cameraman and filmmaker who has filmed and edited over eighty documentaries. He has also been the cinematographer for many films and series.
His latest film is The Voice from the Stone, which he filmed and edited. This is a gothic thriller starring Emilia Clarke and Marton Csokas. It tells the story of a cursed young woman who can’t speak or move but still manages to communicate with people through her thoughts. Raffaele said that he felt like he was born to make this film: “I knew it would be hard to accept another offer after I read the script,” he said in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine. “I’d been waiting for this film to come along.”
Raffaele Riva is currently working on a feature film titled Down. It tells the story of a man who escapes his old life and travels across America. Raffaele said that, like The Voice from the Stone, this project is also something he feels was meant for him: “I felt I was born to make this film,” he said. “We are fortunate that we can make the kinds of films we want to make at our own pace. We’re not tied to the studio.”
Raffaele is also a director of photography and cinematographer for commercials, series, and music videos, working alongside companies such as Filmlight or Deluxe. During his career, he has worked on projects with directors like Tim Burton, Paolo Sorrentino, John Carpenter, and Sam Mendes, among others. Raffaele Riva is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and the Italian Federation of Cinematographers. He was nominated for an Italian Golden Globe for his work on Romanzo Criminale, directed by Michele Placido. He also won the New York Film Critics Online Award for Best Cinematography in 2006.
In 2013 Raffaele Riva took part in a new French TV Series called Nous Trois, T’en Parle? – meaning: we’re talking about it – with Claire Keim and a french TV host called Christopher Pradel.
