Since 1994, Alliance Defending Freedom has been the world’s largest legal organization devoted to upholding parental rights, the sanctity of life, religious freedom, free expression, and God’s plan for marriage and family.
Alliance Defending Freedom was founded on a core principle that in a democratic society all voices can be heard. The unrestricted interchange of ideas, as well as tolerance and respect for opposing viewpoints are the foundations through which we can move forward as one nation to secure individual rights and freedoms.
Alliance Defending Freedom is a non-profit legal organization based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Michael Farris and Jay Sekulow founded it in 1997 as the Alliance Defense Fund. The group’s goal is to defend religious liberty for all people, claiming this freedom is “under assault” from a secular progressive movement.
ADF’s core values are derived from America’s founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. These sacred principles have governed our nation for over two centuries, yet today radical activists seek to silence any voice that dissents from their own agenda. The First Amendment is under attack as never before.
Our mission is to protect the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation. Because ADF is an alliance-building organization, we will not take a position on or advocate for any one set of beliefs. Instead, we seek to advance religious freedom, the sanctity of life and marriage and family as defined by God—whether you are Christian or Jewish or Muslim or Hindu. ADF’s primary responsibility is to protect our clients’ constitutional freedoms in court.
ADF’s goal is to pursue the few cases that most effectively defend the constitutional rights of Americans, not those cases that promote a specific agenda. It has been ADF’s policy to refer civil rights violations and religious discrimination claims to government agencies in order to ensure fairness and consistency with the First Amendment.
