How the Colcom Foundation is Saving the Planet

The true origins of the Colcom Foundation lay in the heart and mind of Cordelia S. May. At the age of 23, she came to the realization that significant changes to the planet can not be noticed day to day and that by the time they were recognizable, it could be too late. With this in mind, she would set about working to resolve problems brought about by overpopulation and ecological imbalance. To better continue this work, she created the Colcom Foundation in 1996.

Addressing the Sixth Mass Extinction

The Colcom Foundation agrees with the scientific evidence that we are living in the sixth mass extinction. As Cordelia S. May believed, many of the ramifications of events like this happen so slowly that they are nearly imperceptible. However, factors that can be addressed such as overpopulation and industrialization can be addressed. To this effect, Colcom has worked to reverse environmental damage and support family planning.

Solving Overpopulation

When it comes to overpopulation, Colcom doesn’t just mean globally, but also nationally. This being the case, they want to encourage rational and humane discussions about immigration that will help reduce the United States’ population level in order to avoid the endless cycle of more young people being needed to care for an aging population. In addition to this, they also support family planning to prevent unwanted pregnancies and reduce the overall birth rate on a global scale.

Focusing on Local Environments

The other side of the Colcom Foundation is the protection of the environment through conservation. To accomplish these goals, they have worked with conservation projects such as Hollow Oak Land Trust, WeConservePA, and Westmoreland Land Trust. Most of Colcom’s current efforts are focused in Southwestern Pennsylvania. They are also working to prevent rail pollution and advocate for the enforcement of environmental laws.

Fighting for the Future

Colcom knows that the future is fragile and that inaction can spell disaster, especially when disaster comes so slowly that you can hardly notice it. Their projects to curb overpopulation and protect the environment will benefit us today and will benefit future generations to come. Refer to this article for additional information.
